INTRODUCTION
So you've heard the term "blog" and you want to know what blogs are all about. Well you've come to the right place. In this series of four articles we will take you from asking what a blog is to having all the knowledge you need to start a blog of your own so you can share your thoughts with hundreds or even thousands of readers.
WHAT IS A BLOG?
Let's begin with some definitions. A bit dry, we realize, but this is a necessary evil. First we'll define the word this whole site is based around - blog.
A blog is a frequently updated online personal journal or diary. It is a place to express yourself to the world. A place to share your thoughts and your passions. Really, it's anything you want it to be. For our purposes we'll say that a blog is your own Web site that you are going to update on an ongoing basis. Blog is a short form for the word weblog and the two words are used interchangeably.
Here are a couple of other definitions:
"...the first journalistic model that actually harnesses rather than merely exploits the true democratic nature of the web. It's a new medium finally finding a unique voice."--Andrew Sullivan
"[a] collection of posts...short, informal, sometimes controversial, and sometimes deeply personal...with the freshest information at the top."--Meg Hourihan
TERMINOLOGY
As so often happens in the English language, many derivates of the word blog have been created. One who participates in the activities of maintaining a blog is known as a blogger and the activity of keeping a blog is known as blogging. So we could say that the blogger blogs in his blog, but that might cause your English teacher to weep. We are going to use these terms with alarming frequency, so make sure you understand what they mean before you go on.
Blog (noun) - a journal or diary that is on the Internet - Andrew Sullivan has the most popular blog on the Internet.
Blogger (noun) - a person who keeps a blog - Bloggers are revolutionizing the way news is shared.
Blog (verb) - to write a blog - I am going to blog before breakfast this morning.
Blogging (verb) - the action of writing a blog - Blogging is my way of sharing my passions with the world.
Originally blogs were known primarily as places for people to write about their day-to-day activities. Their mundane, everyday tasks became fodder for journal entries. Somehow these writers gained a following and the hobby of blogging was born. Today people write about far more interesting topics. But we'll get to that in a minute.
WHO BLOGS?
So who are these fearless people who would be willing to post about their lives in as public a forum as the Internet? They are people just like you. Once the haven of technical know-it-alls, blogging has suddenly caught-on as a legitimate hobby and has entered the mainstream. Every day millions of people, some of whom have no technical ability whatsoever, write on their blogs. To meet this demand some amazing tools have been created that will allow anyone, even people with very little knowledge of computers, to have their own blog. If you can find your way onto the Internet and follow some basic instructions you can have your own blog. It's just that easy.
WHY DO PEOPLE BLOG?
So you may be asking why anyone would want to have their own blog. We believe the answer lies in the fact that every human has a voice and wishes their voice to be heard. The Internet is a medium that is unparalleled in its reach. Never before have average people like you or me been able to reach a global audience with so little trouble. Bloggers have the opportunity of reaching hundreds or even thousands of people each and every day.
There are still many people who like to share the details of their days. They may post twenty or thirty times a day, detailing when they ate lunch and when they headed home from work. On the other hand there are bloggers who give almost no detail about their lives, but write instead about a hobby or interest of theirs. They may dedicate their blog to something they are passionate about.

How to Create a Facebook Fan Page
If you’ve recently graduated from college, it’s hard to imagine your college life apart from Facebook. Catching the latest gossip, becoming friends with that college superstar who has never heard of you and staying up-to-date on the latest happenings. And of course, everyone knows it’s not official until it’s on Facebook! However, Facebook is no longer just for college students. Many people reading this may have parents and even grandparents with an account now. Time Magazine even went as far as to publish an article recently called “Why Facebook is for Old Fogies“.
Facebook has not only become a place for young people to connect and network, but it has also become another avenue for businesses and organizations to connect, network and promote their organization. The main way to network on Facebook is of course by creating a profile or even a group, which can be a little more professional then just a profile. However, if you really want to network and promote yourself, business or organization, then creating a Facebook Fan Page is the best way to do this.
It can be a little difficult finding on Facebook where to begin a fan page, so you’ll have to go to the main page for creating a fan page. When beginning a fan page, you’re given the basics, which make it look like a glorified profile page. A raw fan page includes a wall, feed, photos, videos and list of fans. Although this can suffice, if you really want to attract fans who don’t justconsist of your circle of friends, you’ll want to make some upgrades to your page.
Making your fan page interactive and graphically appealing are two of the most important ways to attract new fans. Making it interactive can easily be done with Facebook’s Application Directory that has a wide-range of applications that can be added to your page with a couple clicks. If you have the resources (web developer/designer), or have some experience there yourself, it’s not too hard to develop a Facebook application. The advantage of this is that you can put your brand on the application and personalize it the way you want. I’ve seen people develop a facebook application in as quick as a few days. Putting interactive applications on your page gives users a reason to not just become fans, but to continually visit and interact on your page.
Along with making your fan page interactive, it’s important to give it some personality by making it look attractive. Facebook allows you to upload a logo or photo for your fan page, but that just isn’t enough. Give your page some flare. Put a sharp graphic linking to your website or a flashy banner along the side bar that promotes a contest. Doing something like this offers fans and potential fans a reason to not only visit your fan page often, but to also visit your company’s website or blog. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve visited a website, just to immediately leave because there was little effort put into the design of the site.
Take a stab at creating a Facebook fan page; it doesn’t cost anything and you can reap the benefits for yourself or business. Build off your page, keeping it fresh and new, so that your fans have a reason to come back to it.
Do you have a Facebook page? What apps are using to make it better?

How to Market Your Blog
It’s no secret that the ailing economy has hit everyone, even us bloggers who depend so heavily on Google Adsense and page impressions. It’s become increasingly harder to grow and maintain those high page views, while also competing with other bloggers in your niche.
As a blogger you don’t want to pay a high rate to advertise your blog and risk not getting a return on your investment; nor do you want to do an adwords campaign. You want quick, easy and free ideas for marketing your blog.
1. Social Networking. In the web 2.0 times we currently live in, this may seem like a dead giveaway, yet many bloggers don’t take full advantage of it. Make sure you use the social networks and take advantage of the sites that are most advantageous to you. Create aFacebook fan page, develop a fan base on Twitter and promote your blog on these social outlets.
2. Article Submission. Similar to social networking, article submission is another way to get your blog in front of more eyes. Stumbleupon appears to be the best place for submitting blog posts, but other good submission sites include Digg, Sphinn and Mixx. This also has SEO value by building links.
3. Guest and sponsored posting. This can have a couple different benefits for your blog. By having guests posts, the guest often promotes their posts, and therefore your blog, through their different networks. Depending on the authority and size of your blog, you can often charge a rate for sponsored posts.
4. Optimize your content. You should check your search engine rankings every few weeks to see where you stand and continually look at ways you can rank higher by including new keywords and stregthening your current keywords.
5. Participate in blog carnivals. You can often participate in at least one blog carnival on a monthly, if not a weekly basis. These offer dual purposes, as they build links and promote your blog.

Share Posts from your Blogger NavBar
Thursday, March 11, 2010
I guess most of you have removed the NavBar from your Blogger Template if you are using some custom versions of the template for your blog. Well, its now time to get back the NavBar again in your template. But not really if you don’t like to use this new feature of Blogger, which allows you to share posts directly from the NavBar. NavBar of the Blogger starting from august 27, 09, includes a “SHARE” button. This button will help you to share posts to popular social networking sites and even e-mail them directly. Social Networking sites have been really popular and a lot many people use those medium to gain readers by sharing posts on such sites. Social Bookmarking widgets are really popular in the blogosphere and now it seems easier when the blogger itself comes with idea of including that in its NavBar. And I know many of you don’t like this blogger’s idea of feature being introduced in the NavBar. Anyway, you can learn how to use this feature and things you can do with it in this post.
To use this feature it’s essential that you have the NavBar in your Template. Don’t worry if you have removed the NavBar already but still interested in this feature, here is how you can add the NavBar again.
NavBar Restoring Instructions

2. In most of your templates, the Blogger Navbar is not displayed just because it’s hidden. Now search for this code within your Template
3. Delete this code from your template and now Blogger NavBar should be appearing in your template.
OK if you now have the Blogger NavBar in your template, you can see the “Share” button yourself in your blog.
Now if you want to use this feature, you need to click on that “share Button”, a pop-up menu appears with links to popular networking (sharing) sites “Facebook” and “Twitter” and also the “Google Reader”. (see the Image Below). If you happen to use this feature on the item pages of your blog, you shall gain access to the “Email” feature too.
If you use this New feature of Blogger there’s a hack you can try. The blogger buzz notes the hack as
“Here’s a fun hack: each URL that gets shared has a specific parameter appended (?spref=nn, where fb=Facebook, tw=Twitter, and gr=Google Reader). If you’re using Google Analytics to measure traffic on your blog, you can search for those strings to see how much traffic you’re getting from each source.” Via Blogger Buzz

Labels in blogger were displayed as a long list with the numbers of post in the specified label previously. Though we could customize our widget to make changes according to our wish with the help of adding codes or using stuff such as javascript, it was bit tough. Now it’s relatively easier. You could just define what you need from the Blogger widget itself.
To add this feature you need to have already added the Labels page element to your template. If you haven’t added this widget, just go to PAGE ELEMENTS section under LAYOUT and “Add a Gadget” and choose “Labels“.
If you have already added the Labels Element in your blog, you can click on “EDIT” for the “Labels” widget.
See the Image below, you will get after you add or edit your “labels” widget.
Under the display option check that “Cloud” radio active button as shown in the image above. This will change your view of labels and you will get the new feature “Label cloud” in your blog.
Selected Labels to Display
Another Important change in the same “labels” gadget is the ability to choose the Labels to display. Previously, all Labels were displayed in the blog and this often limited to using labels if you have used the labels section for displaying the category one. Now you can select from the labels to display under the category widget (if you are using) or the same label widget.
As shown in the image below, you can edit the labels and choose by placing tick in the box adjacent to the specified labels you want to display. Deselect the labels you don’t want to display in your widget.

Ping Your Blog/Website Now from these Free Pinging Sites!
Know what is Blog Pinging? Read what Wikipedia defines about Blog Pinging:
"In blogging, ping is an XML-RPC-based push mechanism by which a weblog notifies a server that its content has been updated. An XML-RPC signal is sent to one or more ping servers, which can then generate a list of blogs that have new material. Many blog authoring tools automatically ping one or more servers each time the blogger creates a new post or updates an old one.
Open ping servers, like VeriSign's Weblogs.com, let other web services subscribe to a list of blogs that have recently pinged them. Blog search engines can provide fresh results very quickly by polling only the newly-updated blogs. Similarly, aggregators use results from ping servers to tell subscribers which items on their subscription lists have fresh material.
In addition to open ping servers, there are also proprietary ping servers that gather information only for their own applications. Most of the major blog search engines operate such ping servers.
Unlike open ping servers, proprietary servers with their own subscription applications have no incentive to share their received ping data directly with other servers, which may offer competing services. As these servers do not share their data, bloggers have to ping a large number of individual servers to receive the desired publicity. As a result, bloggers have turned to services such as Ping-o-matic, which pings multiple proprietary ping servers".

what is 'Monetize' tab in blogger?
The Monetize tab in Blogger makes it easy to enable AdSense ads on your blog. Once enabled, Blogger will retrieve your AdSense earnings data directly from AdSense so you do not need to go to AdSense to get basic earnings information.
AdSense Reports
Once you start generating AdSense impressions, you will begin earning money when people click on ads that show on your site.
The earnings report (visible when you click on the Monetize link from your Dashboard, or the Monetize tab when viewing your blog while logged into Blogger) includes a drop-down bar with Today, Yesterday, Last 7 Days, This Month, Last Month, and All time.
Selecting an option will retrieve the relevant report directly from AdSense.
All time
If you are already an AdSense user, you will notice that Blogger created a new channel (with the URL of your blog) in your account. If you have had AdSense ads on your blog before using Blogger’s AdSense integration to insert ads into your blog, it is important to note that All time will retrieve data only from the time you connected Blogger to your AdSense account.
This in no way affects your overall AdSense reporting, available directly from AdSense.
Terminology
The AdSense report visible from the Monetize tab contains basic information about how many ads have run on your blog, how many clicks were generated, and how much revenue you have earned. Each term in the report is defined below:
•Page impression: A page impression is generated every time a user views a page displaying Google ads. We will count one page impression regardless of the number of ads displayed on that page. For example, if you have a page displaying three ad units and it is viewed twice, you will generate two page impressions and six ad unit impressions.
•Clicks:# The number of times an ad was clicked on in the given reporting period.
•Page CTR (Clickthrough Rate): The number of ad clicks divided by the number of impressions for the page of ads that appears when a link unit is clicked.
•Page eCPM (Effective Cost Per Thousand Impressions): Calculated by dividing earnings by number of page impressions and multiplying. This makes it easier to compare multiple sites to see which are performing better.
•Earnings:
Total revenue earned to date. More detail about earnings is available in the AdSense Help Center.
Howto choose a profItable NICHE (TOPIC) FOR YOUR BLOG?
Choosing a profitable niche
for your blog is what you would have to storm your brain for if you are serious about making money from your blog. In fact this is the next important thing you would have to do after you have decided to make a blog for your self. You would have to take care of the finer points while choosing the topic for your blog.
In this post I will try to draw your attention to the points I think you must go through or consider before choosing a topic or niche for your blog - as I have said "specially if you intend to earn money from your blog".
1. KNOWLEDGE, PASSION, INTEREST
Do I have enough knowledge about the topic? Am I passionate enough about the topic? Is the topic of enough interest to me? These are the few questions you must ask yourself when you are choosing a topic for your blog. And if the answers to all of these questions is a confident "YES" then I must say - you are at least heading towards the right direction.
In fact this is the most important aspect you would have to consider because blogs by nature are meant to be frequently updated with new content - at least the bloggers who are successful does - put the other way the visitors to your blog will expect this from you - frequently updating your blog is what will give life to your blog or else it will be considered a 'DEAD BLOG' (you will find millions of dead blogs online).
To update your blog frequently with fresh and interesting content you need enough understanding of the subject, enough passion and interest in the subject of your blog - because we are humans and by nature we love to do what we LIKE and are passionate about - remember blogging is a long term affair so likings and passion is very much required.
Many bloggers start their blogs with frequent updates or new posts but as time goes on they seem to lose steam and then updates become less and less frequent till it stops one day - thus creating one more dead blog. So choose a topic or niche that interests you and you feel passionate about. Choose a niche that you know quiet a lot about, have read about a lot and would love to write about.
2. SEARCH VOLUME OR MARKET DEMAND
The search volume (how many times people has searched for that topic with relevant keywords through major search engines per month) which can give you an idea about the demand of that particular topic - more the search volume more the demand - more the demand more the possibility of drawing traffic - more traffic = more money - remember we live in a world where every thing depends upon its demand.
A blog build around a less demanding niche will ultimately draw less traffic - less traffic = less money - because the income a blog can generate is directly proportional to the amount of traffic it pulls. As the income comes mainly from advertising and affiliate sales - both of these depends upon traffic. I hope this is pretty simple.
Now, how will you find the search volume for your niche? There are many tools available online to help you find the search volume of the niche you are targeting to make a profitable blog. One such tool is Google AdWords Keyword Tool - just type one or two words that is relevant to your niche or the niche itself and hit enter (also tick the 'use synonyms' check box) - you will be provided with the search volume of various combinations of your keywords and its synonyms on Google per month. One more good tool from Google is Google Traffic Estimator. Another good tool is Good Keywords.
3. AVAILABILITY OF CONTENT
As already said that blogs by nature 'are' or 'are expected' to be updated by new posts frequently so you do need enough stock of content to continue blogging. If you only rely on your own content stock then let me tell you that you will soon find yourself running out of stock. So you need many resources from where you can get new content or ideas to learn from and then be able to put it in your own words.
To get content you would have to deal on both offline and online resources like magazines, newspapers, forums, other blogs, rss subscriptions etc. So you would have to make sure you have lot of these in your niche. Specific magazines and newspapers are to be subscribed which writes about your niche. You would have to join forums and participate in discussions related to your topic - do not hesitate to ask questions or to present your views. Blogs are to be found out that talks about your niche and then subscribe to their RSS feeds to get the latest updates.
If you are thinking I am talking about duplicating content then you have totally mistaken me. What I meant above is to read and learn and then present your ideas in an innovative way in your own words. Never ever duplicate content if you want your blog not to be blacklisted by the search engines. I hope you have understood what I mean. Moreover this is what all bloggers do. And even in normal life everybody has to learn things for the first time somewhere from somebody because what we speak and practice is what we have learnt nothing is stored in our brains when we were born. 'We all learn from each other'.
To search for blogs do a Google Blogsearch or search through any search engine with your niche relevant keywords plus the word 'blogs' attached to it and then bookmark the blogs whose content you like.
To search for forums in your niche type in the search box your niche relevant keywords plus 'forums' and then bookmark the ones that you like.
4. CHOOSE A WIDE NICHE
Do not choose a very narrow niche which has a very little to be written about. Choose such a niche which has many sub-niches thus giving you more variety to write upon and more scope for innovation. For example :-
•You can choose ENVIRONMENT where you can blog about Global Warming, Green Peace, Climatic Changes, Effect of Industry, Ecosystems, Environmental Education and etc.
•You can choose HEALTH AND FITNESS where you can blog about Health Tips, Fat Loss, Body Building, Women's Health, Personal Hygiene, Smoking, Diet Supplements and etc.
•You can choose TECHNOLOGY where you can blog about Electronics Gadgets, Cameras, Mobiles, Computers, Televisions and etc.
•You can choose ONLINE MONEY MAKING where you can blog about Online Money Making Ways, Blogging, SEO, Paid Surveys, Freelance Jobs and etc.
•You can choose SPORTS where you can blog about Indoor Games, Outdoor Games, Sports Goods, Sporting Events, Martial Arts, Food Supplements, Sports Heroes and etc.
SOME TYPICAL SITUATIONS THAT MAY ARISE
SOME LAST WORDS - All the above points that I have discussed is been done assuming that you want to create a blog for profit but if you are not interested in money, rather you want to blog about something not caring about who reads it or its monetizing factor, or just want to blog for fun, or just want to get a feel of blogging then too you can start a blog and in that case you can be least concerned about the above points. But for the ones who wants to take up blogging for profit those points are a must for them to consider.
OVER TO YOU - I hope the process is clear to you but if you have any comment or suggestion or question to ask please do so in the comment section below. Any response from your side is highly appreciated. You'll give LIFE to my blog.
for your blog is what you would have to storm your brain for if you are serious about making money from your blog.

SOME TYPICAL SITUATIONS THAT MAY ARISE
•Say you have chosen a niche that you are interested in, have passion for, have enough knowledge about, has a wide scope and have moderate resources but not enough search volume - then what to do? My advice is - if your purpose is to monetize your blog then no doubt this is not the right niche for you so 'FORGET IT'. Because low search volume = low interest = low traffic = low or no income - simple maths! The solution - start all over again and choose another (be more planned in your approach this time as you already know some of the pitfalls now).
•Say you have chosen a topic which has enough search volume, wide scope of sub-topics and has available content but you are new to the topic so does not have enough interest, passion or knowledge about - then what to do? My advice is - this time you are not that much far from choosing the niche for your blog - just give yourself some time and learn as much as you can from the available resources and when you feel confident about your niche start your blog. Remember its never too late to learn anything - learning has no age - all the experts in your niche has also learned about the niche and in fact they are still learning because knowledge has no end. So start learning. But this would depend if you are willing to start and learn something new.

Easy Ways To Make Extra Cash Online
Google AdSense now have another competitor - Kontera ContentLink™. Kontera provides contextual ads they called ContentLink™ using what they refer to as their patent-pending technology. You can read more about it by surfing Kontera's site.
It appears to me that there are some improvements of Kontera ContentLink™ over AdSense Text Ads. When you hover your mouse over the ContentLink™, a tool tip (a small box) will appear displaying the full text ad from the advertiser that sponsors that ContentLink™. The visitor then can choose either to ignore the ad or click on it if he find that that is what he is seeking. Furthermore, it either provides a relevant ad or an internal link to another relevant page within your site or network of sites. It may also provide 3rd Party Information Links to external information including dictionaries and encyclopedias. This provides for a better visitor experience and will encourage repeat visits. However, I do not know if publishers are paid for clicks to such sites but I very much doubt it. I will query Kontera and update this post when I receive a response.
A further improvement of Kontera ContentLink™ over AdSense is that Kontera ContentLink™ can display ads even in password protected sites.
However, there is a big difference between Google AdSense and Kontera ContentLink™. Google AdSense are prepared to work with small publishers and imposes no condition on the amount of traffic they receive to their sites, but Kontera ContentLink™ will only approve sites that have over 250,000 page impressions per month. That will rule out many blogs.

There are actually an endless number of different ways that you can improve blog traffic if you know what to do and how to do it. Here are some tips to improve blog traffic by making improvements to your blog.
Improve Blog Tip #1 – Improve your content quality and write better overall content.
The quality of your content is going to be one of the most important criteria when it comes to determining how successful your blog is. Great content is going to make it easier for you to market your blog, and you are going to find yourself being able to improve the entire community around your blog so that other people will begin to recognize the value behind the information that you are providing. Writing improved content will not always be easy, but it will be well worth the time and effort investment.
Improve Blog Tip #2 – Set aside time for the purpose of brainstorming.
Your writing skills are not the only requirement for when it comes to creating good blog content. You are also going to need to have ideas that are original as well as interesting. If you do not have good ideas, then your quality of your content is going to suffer, even if you have the best writing skills around. Make sure that you are regularly setting time aside so that you can brainstorm, coming up with as many different ideas as you can.
Improve Blog Tip #3 – Hire other people to help you write in your blog.
If you are finding it difficult to come up with enough high quality content for your blog, consider paying other people to help you out. There are plenty of high quality bloggers out there that are more than willing to write for you if you are willing to pay them to help you out with your blog. If your blog is capable of producing more money than you are spending, then this is a consideration that is well worth making.
Improve Blog Tip #4 – Publish posts from guest bloggers and writers.
There are many bloggers out there that have learned the trick of publishing guest posts from bloggers elsewhere on the internet in order to get more comments when they cannot afford to pay other writers to write in their blogs. Guest posting is something that is great for everybody involved. It gives you free content, it gives the guest blogger increased exposure and a link back to their own blog or website, and it offers your readers more content as well as a new perspective on the same niche or industry.
Improve Blog Tip #5 – Publish more or less frequently.
If you are not posting a lot, start finding ways to post more frequently. Only do this if you think you will benefit from it in some way. On the other hand, if you are posting too often, try increasing your blog quality by decreasing your blog quantity.
